Gentle work with the membranes and fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord.

Developed by Dr John Upledger, CranioSacral Therapy addresses factors that compromise posture and function throughout the body, with a focus on the head, vertebral column and their membranous and neurological contents.

In the 1970s American Osteopath Dr John Upledger observed the distinct, regular movement of the dural tube (the tough membrane that surrounds and protects the spinal cord) during surgery on a patient's neck. His research, in collaboration with a team of scientists at Michigan State University, led to the evolution of highly effective healing techniques and demonstrated that many problems previously thought confined to the head can in fact have primary causes elsewhere in the body.

With CranioSacral Therapy, factors that compromise posture and function throughout the body are addressed with equal emphasis to those that appear in the neighbourhood of the cranium. There is, however, a focus around the effect on the head and vertebral column, with their membranous and neurological contents, and their immediate connective tissues — collectively recognised as the craniosacral system.

Sessions are gentle and non-invasive. Practitioners use a light touch — often no heavier than the weight of a coin — to evaluate the craniosacral system and encourage the body's own healing responses.
